BROOKLINE, MA -- Six Brookline Public School students will receive Patricia Gadsby Awards for artistic achievement from the Brookline Arts Center on Wednesday, June 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. This awards ceremony will take place at the Arts Center, and is free and open to the public.
The artwork of the award winners and the honorable mention winners will be on display in the Brookline Arts Center’s gallery from June 1 to 3, 2009. Admission to the gallery, to view the work of the Gadsby Award winners and Honorable Mentions, is free. Regular gallery hours are Mondays through Fridays, 9 am to 4:30 pm. Artwork by Brookline Public School students in grades four through seven is submitted for the competition. A jury of artists and art educators has selected award winners and Honorable Mentions from each of the four grades.
The Award winners are Daniel Robinson, Karalyn Resnick, Rani Darerish-Houssami, Andrew Gregory, Sakura Seto and Anna Koenig. The Gadsby Award winners will receive a scholarship for a free art class at the Brookline Arts Center. The artwork by Daniel Robinson was named “Best in Show.” The honorable mention honorees are Xue Long Mu, Omri Gatt, Jackson Moreno-Field and Esther Pronoust.
The Gadsby Awards are named after Patricia Rasmussen Gadsby, who served as Brookline Arts Center Community Advisor from 1980 to 1990. She was an enthusiastic, loyal and creative friend to the Center throughout her life. The Gadsby Awards were established to honor Tricia’s spirit, her love of the arts and her ability to inspire those around her. With the Gadsby Awards, the Brookline Arts Center hopes to encourage Brookline students to study and create art, and to think creatively.
Founded in 1964, the Brookline Arts Center offers art exhibitions and classes in painting, drawing, sculpture, pottery and jewelry for adults and children. Through its gallery exhibition opportunities, its teaching positions, and its annual Crafts Showcase, the Brookline Arts Center is committed to supporting working professional artists, and to inspiring students to love and create art.
The Brookline Arts Center is located at 86 Monmouth Street, and is convenient to public transportation. This property, which is listed in the State Register of Historic Places, has received a matching grant from the Massachusetts Preservation Projects Fund through the Massachusetts Historical Commission, Secretary of the Commonwealth, William Francis Galvin, Chairman.
The Brookline Arts Center is funded in part by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. Trader Joe’s at Coolidge Corner, Brookline, will provide refreshments for the Gadsby Awards. Gifts for the Gadsby Award winners were donated by Dick Blick Art Materials, of Boston.
