BROOKLINE, MA — For people with busy schedules who cannot commit to a long-term visual arts class, the Brookline Arts Center is now offering one-day workshops and short evening courses on a variety of topics, including how to make mobiles, nuno felting, and a free tour of the Boston Public Library. Please call 617-566-5715 or visit our website at www.brookline artscenter.com if you would like to register for any of these workshops.
The instructor Vladimir Barsukov will teach Kinetic Sculpture: Making Mobiles, a one-day workshop on Saturday, February 16, 2008. His mobiles are in art galleries all over New England: as a PhD. in physics and mathematics, he can make kinetics -- the process of assembling and balancing mobiles -- accessible to anyone. The class runs from 12:00 noon to 4:00pm. Students will leave the class with their own mobile.
Two new short classes at the Brookline Arts Center in February encourage students to transform paper into beautiful works of art. Marc Mancuso has brought Scherenschnitte to Boston: this traditional German art form uses scissors to snip colored paper into beautiful abstract designs or elaborate scenes. Many people learned this effect with snowflakes or paper dolls: now, young artists are using this traditional effect to make exciting contemporary work. Scherenschnitte (pronounced Sharon – sh – net) begins on Tuesday, February 26 at 10 a.m.
Judith Ann Bell will teach students how to turn their simplest drawing into multiple prints in Relief Printing, which begins on Thursday, February 7 at 7:00 p.m. With linoleum block prints, students will learn to make their own greeting cards, gifts, even labels for homemade jam or beer. Open to beginner through advanced students.
The Brookline Arts Center is also offering classes in a new art form, called nuno felting, which can be used to make unique scarves, vests, handbags or wall hangings. Nuno felting involves adhering fine merino wool fibers to silk gauze through a moisture and agitation technique. The result is a beautifully layered thick fabric. It’s fun to do! The class runs from March 25 - 28, 2008.
For something completely different, join Brookline Arts Center Executive Director Susan Navarre for a tour of the magnificent Boston Public Library in Copley Square. This free tour, will take place on Thursday, March 6th from 1:00 – 4:00 pm. Learn about the library’s architecture by McKim, Mead and White, with an introduction to the mural art by John Singer Sargent, Puvis de Chavannes, and Edward Austin Abbey. The Boston Public Library is loaded with treasures that reward the attentive visitor.
